H. 'Reaching New Heights' a 2012 introduction by Bobby Baxter

H. 'Reaching New Heights'
(Baxter, 2011)

H. 'Reaching New Heights' is not only one of my daylilies. "Reaching New Heights" is also a motivational statement and goal of Daylilies of North Carolina.

As a flower, H. 'Reaching New Heights', registered at 68", is one of the tallest daylilies of all time. The AHS Registration Database shows 43 registered cultivars of 68" or higher, and only 10 registered cultivars of 74" or higher. In 2010 & 2011, it exceeded 74" in my garden.

Motivationally, "Reaching New Heights" guides my hybridizing and passion for the daylily. As the leading hybridizer of high percentage (over 51%) polymerous daylilies with more than 20 registrations I am also an advocate of encouraging the promotion and advanced development of the form. By pricing my polymerous daylilies affordably and sharing information freely, I believe more daylily fanciers will grow & enjoy the polys, and more gardeners will be hybridizing them.

I also challenge hybridizers of the spider form of hemerocallis to work toward "eight-legged" spiders as genuine arachnids have.

Carolina Starfish
Hemerocallis ‘Carolina Starfish’ (Baxter, 2012)

Hemerocallis ‘Carolina Starfish’ is a 100% polymerous 2013 introduction.

H. 'Carolina Starfish' is a wonderful crispate unusual form daylily that just happens to also be 100% polymerous. Similar to H. 'Secret Agent Babe' the Starfish comes out of breeding two my best polymerous flowers H. 'Carolina Octopus' × H. 'Carolina Flying Poly Possum.'

I try to be conservative when submitting registration data so I registered the bloom of this flower at 7 ½ inches so don't be surprised if you see it larger in your garden. It is an early season bloomer on top of 24 inch scapes. The base color is a pleasant yellow and the eye is a broken rouge above a chartreuse throat.

It is amazing how many yellows I get out of using the deep red of H. 'Carolina Octopus' but that is because of H. 'Almost Paradise' in its background. The eye and crispation are from H. 'Carolina Flying Poly Possum'. I would not call the Starfish an easier pod setter, but it will set pods. The pollen is wonderful.

H. 'Carolina Starfish' is a diploid semi-evergreen.
