During the summer of 1995, eighteen people from MS and AL met in Amory and
organized a daylily club. We submitted an article to the local newspaper
and invited the public to attend our next meeting.
Lorene Smith and Ruby Anderson of the Tuscaloosa club answered questions,
and provided tips and hints on organizing a new club. We began our club
with 21 charter members. Today the North MS-AL Daylily Society boasts 110
members.
Strong leadership is our key to success. Mary Hodges served as our first
President, followed by Stanley Hayes. Currently, Linda Beck is our
President. Linda and Troy, her husband, publish the club newsletter, HEM
AND HERBS, four times a year. We submit articles to THE DIXIE DAYLILY and
members attend regional meetings. We invite hybridizers to speak at our
meetings.
During the past few years, Larry Grace, John Rice, Ted Petit, John Peat,
Clarence Crochet, Tim Bell, Pat and Grace Stamile and our own regional
hybridizers were our club's special guests. John Kinnebrew will be our
February 2003 speaker and Dan Trimmer will be our honored guest in January
2004.

Beck's Bloomers
Tupelo, MS
Ours is a small garden, mostly in our front yard. We landscape with our
daylilies and companion plants. We use yard art, birdhouses, bonsai and
oriental design.
Troy has been hybridizing for the past few years and has a few "keepers",
although he discards many.
He gets an early start with seedlings grown in the greenhouse. We have
fewer than 300 daylilies with a select few used for hybridizing.
All winter, Troy plans new buildings and larger seedling beds for the new
plants that he hope to obtain in the near future. This past summer he added
a Koi pond, oriental teahouse, double teahouse arbor complete with marble
garden bench, an oriental pavilion and observation deck. There are seventeen
new raised boxes in the lower garden.
Working in the greenhouse and garden is a most wonderful way to relax and
unwind from our full-time jobs.

Victorian Place
Garden
Caledonia, MS
Visitors to Victorian Place Garden will be
welcomed by the gardens distinctive style. The garden is designed around
a two-story Victorian home built by Bill's grandfather in 1910. After
consulting many old garden plans, Bill and Rissa developed an attractive
geometric design for the front garden consisting of a long rectangle
incorporating a circular motif with concentric paths and built up beds.
Three large arched arbors, decorative fountains, benches, and statuary
are all features found in the garden. A wide variety of plants are
displayed in the fount garden, as well as in beds surrounding the house.
The garden features daylilies, antique roses, butterfly bushes, crape
myrtle, lantana, iris, clematis, azaleas, hosta hydrangea, ornamental
grasses, ferns and numerous other perennials and annuals.
During the last year, Bill and Rissa have
completed a third greenhouse. The 24' x 96' greenhouse contains about
1700 container grown daylilies which should be in full bloom in later
April or early May. In addition to container grown daylilies, another
24' x 96' greenhouse will be full of vine ripe tomatoes beginner about
the middle of April. |
