2009 AHS National Daylily Convention

ORLANDO AREA GARDENS: This tour includes the following gardens.

Nicole's Daylilies

I started building my nursery two years ago and being fortunate enough to be near some of Florida’s best hybridizers, I was able to incorporate the features that I liked best from each. Tucked away on eight acres near beautiful Wekiva Springs National forest, my garden is growing quickly. First, I am blessed with crystal clear spring water which is a great benefit for my growing plants. My property is beautifully wooded with large oak trees and native fauna and abundant wildlife which is a constant source of interest.

My nursery is divided into two sections, shade cloth for mature plants and future introductions and the second half is ground cloth with no overhead shade for first bloom seedlings. The entire area is under automated irrigation. I am currently blooming six to ten thousand seedlings a year from which I cull my future introductions.

Now that I am finished with the commercial phase, I am actively working on making my nursery into a garden that is a pleasure to the eye.

Dan and Evia Loye Stateler's Garden, Loughman, Florida

Dan and Loye are some of the original Central Florida Daylily Society members, whose love blossoms into their garden. They set the standards by which every couple dreams, happily married for over 50 years. This lovely two acre garden is a place of peace and tranquility and is across the road from a large spring fed lake.

From the main road, you are definitely not able to see its splendor at a glance. This garden is divided into rooms and uses many varieties of plants to bring to it a multitude of colors throughout the year. It has tropical areas as well as traditional garden areas. The daylily is only one of the many botanical highlights in this lush garden.

The concept of rooms is achieved through the use of a variety of unusual elements including stone, wood, metal siding, water pipe and even venetian blind boxes, talk about going green, they are ahead of the game. This garden takes the whole family to plant and nurture it, and it is designed as a place where peace and compassion, hope and understanding can grow, flower and bear fruit. The Stateler family includes seven children, seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild on the way.

Dan has hybridized and registered over fifteen cultivars through the years. One of his most favorite is H. “Comanche Gold”, and although he loves them all, his least favoured is H. “Double Diadem”. This family extends southern hospitality to all its visitors and loves to share their garden. It is well worth a visit while in the Central Florida Area.

Richard and Dawn Page, "Garden Of Angels," Port St. John, Florida

Richard and Dawn are members of both Sunbelt and Central Florida Daylily Societies. They have been happily married for 17 years. They have raised four sons and have three grandchildren. Their garden is located in a large subdivision of homes on a 1/3 acre corner lot. The community of Port St. John has about 20,000 people.

There is a lot to see in a small area. Part of the charm of the garden comes from several resting areas that provide shade while taking a break from the labor of the garden. There are several daylily beds, some divided by size, form, age, ploidy, or even just by taste. The garden also has many other varieties of flowers, bushes and small trees to enjoy.

The garden has been designed and redesigned on several occasions and now provides better walkways and items of interest to draw your attention into and through the garden. Richard and Dawn have both registered a few daylilies. For Richard it must be in the genes as his mother is Ema Harvey who hybridized H. “Lonesome Dove”

Southern Hospitality is always provided, so please make time to come and see this beautiful garden.
